Study Abroad Returnee Seminar – Enroll today for fall quarter!
This 1-unit seminar is for recently returned study abroad participants who don’t want the study abroad experience to end and want to know how to keep it alive within you.  Reflect on what you’ve learned and discover how to move forward in job searching, further education and personal development – right now and into the future.  Contact the Study Abroad Center for the course enrollment access code.

Lessons from Abroad: Study Abroad Returnee Conference
November 3, 2013,
9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA  Go from abroad to job! Learn how to market your abroad experience to future employers AND expand your network of people interested in the international education field. Meet other returned study abroad students, share your experiences, and learn about ways to internationalize your career goals.

International Education Week Movie Screening:  Bend it Like BeckhamFREE!  November 14, 2013, 6:30pm UCI Student Center - Mark your calendar NOW!  

During International Education Week explore the clash of cultures and generations in the context of world soccer by joining the party to watch Bend it Like Beckham.  The film captures the struggle of a young woman of Indian heritage, growing up in London, who is passionate about football (soccer), while her parents make every effort to guide her to be a proper Indian girl.  Following the movie enjoy a reception and refreshments with UCI students, faculty, staff and alumni.  Watch for details in October.  Advance registration required.

English Conversation Program FacilitatorJoin now!
Mondays 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. 
Meet students from around the world.  English facilitators assist international students improve their English conversation skills in a fun, casual environment through one-on-one pairings, group activities, and more! International Club (or iClub) is a UCI student club designed to bring together international and domestic undergraduate and graduate students through fun and constructive social events. Past events have included bonfires, hikes, Thanksgiving dinners, pub nights, and game days. The club has members from all over the world, and includes both UCI undergraduates and graduate students. Communication Club (conversation partners) - Join for the fall!
Be a conversation partner for a UCI Extension international student, September through early December. International Pub Night – Chill at the Anthill
Every Thursday night at the Anteater Pub & Grille, UCI Student Center
Meet international students, study abroad returnees, residents from the International Village, members of UCI’s iClub and more!  Everyone is welcome!  International Students over 21, be sure to bring your UCI ID and passport to be served.  Times vary per quarter. Play Sports with International Students – Soccer! Volleyball! Basketball! Tennis!
Join international students for recreational sports. Tentative Fall quarter schedule:

  • Volleyball/Basketball Monday afternoons at Middle Earth courts near Extension
  • Soccer/Tennis Wednesday afternoons at the ARC fields/courts.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
October 8 or October 15 - Get Involved in Research Workshops

Did an international topic spark your interest while abroad?  Plan a faculty-mentored research project on your international area of interest.  Opportunities are available to apply for research funding, for publication in the UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, and to present your research at the annual UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium.  Visit the UROP website (above) for details, including workshop registration.

Global Connect – Teach global issues to high school students
Application due: Wednesday, September 25, 2013
Share your global spirit and new global knowledge with others as a global studies intern, teaching 21st century realities of global trends (immigration, wealth distribution), borderless social issues (AIDS, poverty, hunger), and current events taking place in the world today (e.g. Arab Spring) to local 9th graders.  Global Connect interns earn 2 units P/NP.   Application required.  For more information contact Jazmin Martinez at

Civic and Community Engagement Minor – Join today!
The Civic and Community Engagement minor gives you the knowledge, skills, and values to be agents of change in “your” community - whether you see it as local or global.  Learn how to effectively contribute to the mission of community organizations for social change and connect with other students like you.  You can start the minor by enrolling this fall in Introduction in Civic and Community Engagement (University Studies 10).  For more information, contact the Director, Paula Garb at

Global Brigades at UCI

Global Brigades is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Student brigades travel to Honduras, Ghana, Panama, and Nicaragua to work in partnership with local communities to improve the quality of life in under resourced regions while respecting local culture.  Global Brigades at UCI has brigades in the following areas:  Medical, Water, Public Health, Environmental, Dental, Microfinance/Business, and Engineering.  For more information contact us at:

Go Abroad Fair!  - You're go away again!

Teaching English abroad is a great way start a new career and gain global experience.  Your adventures abroad continue when you complete the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate Program with UC Irvine Extension. Plan now for next summer.  Our 10-week summer intensive program allows you to earn your certificate in a consolidated amount of time and gives you the quality training you need to teach with confidence. Valuable benefits include the opportunity for interaction with visiting international students, job referral assistance, and post-program staff support. Program starts June 20, 2014. You've been abroad - now gain hands-on experience interning in a globally-focused internship in your own backyard. Internships are available in virtually any field, including internship sites such as Amnesty International, Interpol, Center for International Policy, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Citizens for Global Solutions, US State Department, and many, many more!
