Research & Study Abroad Workshop

LESSONS FROM ABROAD:  Study Abroad Returnee Conference

On-Campus Leadership - Share what you learned abroad with fellow UCI Students
Develop your leadership skills, share international and global insights and knowledge with fellow UCI students while earning money, academic credit and/or developing professional skills.  Apply for the following on-campus positions during winter or spring quarters:

  • UCI Extension International Programs Activity Lead.  Paid work with international students!  Connect them to UCI, Irvine, and Southern California. Provide in-office support, exhibiting excellent customer service, to ESL students.  Some positions available now, and must be available to work in the summer.  To apply, send your cover letter and resume to Brittany Laurin at Brittany.Laurin@ce.uci.edu  Questions?  Email Activities@ce.uci.edu
  • School of Social Sciences Dean’s Ambassadors Council  – Apply in April. The Council works to address School and local issues and concerns, to promote strong ties between students and faculty, and to develop a progressive social academic community.
  • UTeach Teach your own seminar and share what you learned abroad with fellow UCI students.  Information sessions in late winter quarter and early spring quarter. Apply in Spring quarter.
  • SOAR Outreach Campus Visit Volunteer.  Application has a rolling deadline.
    Participate on panels to share your undergraduate experience and tips for incoming/prospective students; lead small group tours of UCI for interested schools, community colleges, and youth based organizations; facilitate workshops related to cultural identity, leadership development, and college readiness.

Your Future is Global

Global Connect Internship – Teach global issues to high school students Application due: March 6
Share your global spirit and spread your global knowledge to others. Become an academic intern to teach interactive workshops on concepts that define the 21st century, such as global trends, borderless social issues, and the multidimensional themes of globalization. Global Connect is an educational initiative that partners with secondary schools to teach a course on Globalization and International Relations. Global Connect interns earn 2 units P/NP. Want to continue your adventures abroad? Get certified to teach English right here at UCI, through UCI Extension TEFL Certificate
Teaching English abroad is a great way start a new career and gain global experience. Leverage your international experience by completing an intensive 10-week TEFL Certificate program through UCI’s Division of Continuing Education. Valuable benefits include the opportunity to interact with visiting international students, job referral assistance, and post-program staff support. Global Leadership Certificate Program (GLCP)

Discover what it means to be a leader in a global context.  Get involved at UCI and abroad.  Develop leadership skills and put them into action!  This certificate program can help set you apart as you transition from undergrad to the professional world.  You can initiate change and make a difference.  Check us out on the web at the link above.

Join the Minor in Civic and Community Engagement
Take what you have learned abroad and put it into community action and public service here at home.  Develop knowledge, skills, and values to be agents of change in your community. The minor is open to all undergraduate majors on campus. 

Money/Job Experience for Your International Experience

U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program (unpaid) - Fall Internship Deadline March 1, 2017
This program offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 10-week, unpaid internships that provide intensive educational and professional experience within the environment of America’s principle foreign affairs agency. Internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S. embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around the world, as well as at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. and other locations throughout the U.S. Participants gain first-hand, hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with – Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of America’s diplomatic efforts.

Internships in Washington D.C. (UCDC) or Sacramento (UCCS)
You've gained valuable experience and transferable skills abroad - now use those skills while gaining hands-on work experience interning in a globally-focused internship. Internships are available in virtually any field, including internship sites such as Amnesty International, Interpol, Center for International Policy, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Citizens for Global Solutions, US State Department, and many, many more! Come to an Information Session to learn more:

English Conversation Program Facilitator - Join for spring quarter!
Meet students from around the world.  Further your cultural insight, build relationships and appreciate our diverse campus community at ECP! Serve as an English Facilitator and assist international students with building their conversational English skills.  Each week, you will participate in one-on-one pairings, group activities and more. International Studies Club
The International Studies Club is an academic club designed to integrate students from all backgrounds who share a common interest in the global arena. From areas of public health assistance, governance and public policy to anthropology and culture.  ISC incorporates academic events that focus on global issues, societies and cultures and students can come together to synthesize opinions and ideas. The synergistic club is designed for all students of UCI, regardless of major.

Communication Club (conversation partners) - Now accepting applications for Spring Quarter.

International Coffee Hour
Fridays, 11:00am - 12:30pm, Counseling Center, Student Services I
Co-hosted by the International Center and the Counseling Center, this is an opportunity to share culture and friendship in a casual environment.  Topics of conversation are as diverse as the people who meet each week.

Are you tired of talking about your time abroad with friends and family and seeing their eyes glaze over? Below are some ways for you to get a captive audience and share about your experiences with people who want to hear it.

  • Join Us On Facebook & Instagram  Show UCI students what YOU did abroad! Post your photos, videos, blogs, stories, and more.  This is an easy way to promote study abroad at UCI and could quite possibly inspire someone else to take their journey!

  • Be in the Student Spotlight on our home page.   We would love to include YOUR story.  Take a look at the short list of questions on EEE and respond to those that pertain to you.  These Student Spotlights motivate UC Irvine students of today and tomorrow to follow in your foot-steps and make the life-changing decision to study abroad!
