Information for Returnees

Have you recently returned from abroad and are interested in meeting international students from all over the world?

The Study Abroad Center is offering UCI students the opportunity to serve as a mentor to an international student who will be coming to study at UCI in Fall 2017.

Participating in the program will give you the chance to meet and become friends with an international student. This is a great opportunity to help an international student integrate into life at UCI and feel part of the campus community! As a mentor, you will also serve as an invaluable source of information for new international students who have questions and concerns.

How does the program work?

  • If you are interested in participating in the program, please check back in early June, when the application will open.
  • Prior to the start of the quarter, you will be assigned to an international student based on the information you have provided on your application. You will be sent information about the student to whom you are matched with via email. Please note that we will do our best to match you with an international student although this is not guaranteed and will be dependent on the number of participants in the program.
  • There will be a meeting/social event during Week 1 or 2. The date/location are not yet determined. This is where you will have the chance to meet the student to whom you are assigned and can make arrangements to get together. If you are unable to attend this meeting, please contact your Exchange Partner to make alternative arrangements.
  • You and your Mentee will agree where, when and how often you want to meet and your level of involvement with one another will be up to both of you. You are expected to meet at least twice per quarter. At the minimum, you could give him/her a tour of the campus, explain how things work on campus and be available to answer any questions. You are not expected to know all the answers but can help the student to find out and can make him/her feel welcome and know that there’s a friendly face on campus.

Thank you for your interest in the program and please feel free to contact the Study Abroad Center if you have any questions at:
