How & When to Apply to a Global Education Program

All UCI students are eligible to participate in global education opportunities, including study, research, internships, and more. To take advantage of these opportunities, you must complete the two steps outlined below. You can complete both steps simultaneously.

You must apply to your program following the instructions provided by the program provider or host institution, adhering to their established deadlines. This ensures that your eligibility is verified and your participation is confirmed. Deadlines, which can range from 9 to 12 months in advance, and requirements, such as submitting transcripts, specific documents, and letters of recommendation, vary by program. Please refer to the information below for application information and deadlines for each program option.

All UCI students must receive UCI Campus Approval via UCIAbroad in order to participate on a global opportunity. This approval process ensures compliance with UCI eligibility requirements for Student International Activities, such as confirming that students are not on disciplinary or academic probation.

Receiving UCI Campus Approval does not guarantee final acceptance into a program; you must also be accepted by your program provider or host university (see Apply to Your Program above).

Submit only one UCI Campus Approval request per term abroad. Requests are accepted on a rolling basis, according to the dates listed below, and processing may take 3-4 weeks. Please note that some programs require UCI approval by their program application deadline, so be sure to plan accordingly. If you can’t find your program in UCIAbroad, email studyabroad@uci.edu with these details so we can add it: Program Provider, Program Name, Program URL, Term Abroad.

AND…Don’t forget to apply for or renew your passport! All programs with travel will require that you have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your program end date. If you do not have a passport or it will expire less than 6 months after your program, apply for one now. Visit UCI Passport Services or the embassy of the issuing country for information right away in case there are processing delays. Undocumented students can book an appointment with the University of California Immigrant Legal Services Center for guidance.
