This on-campus job allows you to share your enthusiasm for global experiences and increases your knowledge of international education opportunities! As a peer advisor, you will advise and motivate students to go abroad as well as interact with UCI staff and faculty as we all work towards the same mission of making international education expected and achievable for all students.

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Lead Outbound Advisor, Study Abroad Peer Advisors support the mission of the UCI Study Abroad Center. Peer Advisors are UCI students who have participated in a study, work, internship, volunteer, research or teaching program in a foreign country or have other global interests, passions, and experiences. Peer Advisors assist with outreach, recruitment, advising, and general administrative duties and support.

Duties:

  • Advising
    • Prospective students interested in global opportunities 
    • Participants in understanding the pre-departure process
    • Returning students on policies, processes, and resources available
  • Outreach/Recruitment
    • Organize and execute presentations for classes, dorms, students groups, campus events, and assist with study abroad fairs
    • Create and distribute marketing materials and host information tables
  • Administrative duties and other support
    • Take a leadership role on special projects like social media, website editing, event planning, etc.
    • Respond to emails and phone calls, data collection, etc.

Requirements:

Time Commitments:

  • Hours per week: 10-15
  • Peer Advisor’s weekly schedule is set based on availability and project interests
  • The majority of hours will be Monday-Friday between 9am-4pm PT for advising. However, there will be some work activities that occur outside of these hours (e.g. orientations, class outreach, open dialogues, special projects).
  • The entire academic year: September through June.
  • Training Week (paid and in-person): Monday, September 16, 2024 through Friday, September 20, 2024, tentatively 9:00am – 2:00pm. Start working Welcome Week: September 25, 2023 – September 29, 2023.
  • Attend weekly Peer Advisor Meetings. Date/time determined each quarter.

Required Experiences and Skills:

  • Must be living in the United States from September through June.
  • Global experience – study abroad, work abroad, internship abroad, volunteer abroad, research abroad, teaching abroad (whether in-person or virtual programs) or other global experience/passion.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule of in-person and virtual
  • Ability to articulate why global experiences are valuable and important.
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Ability to learn and communicate complex information and processes
  • Patience and empathy when working with diverse populations
  • Reliability, adaptability & flexibility
  • At least one preferred experience from below

Preferred Experiences and Skills:

  • Student with financial aid work-study award
  • Advising experience
  • Customer service experience
  • Marketing experience (e.g. social media, video production, graphic design)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Experience organizing and leading events
  • Experience independently carrying out projects

Pay Rate & Positions Available:

  • $16 per hour
  • 8 positions available
